So, as you might have figured out, I have mixed feelings about the results of the election. So many people have put their feelings about Obama's election so much better than I could, and I think that's a good sign. I get the feeling that this means a lot more to people in older generations, as they've seen more of the change that made this possible, and I think the fact that many in my generation find this amazing but not unbelievable is a testament to the speed of our culture's progress.
But would that it were faster. The result of the vote on California's Proposition 8 disappoints me greatly. And while I find it terrible that the state's Constitution is so easily amended (the process having caused many more bad policies than just this one), it would still be alarming if 49% of the electorate were opposed to gay marriage. I grew up in an area where the sentiment was rather prominent, but I still cannot comprehend it. It seems so irrational, so uncompassionate. But I have hope that I will see our society change, not just in California, but across the nation. And that I will find it unbelievable, and my children will simply find it amazing.
